Boiler Update

17th March, 2006

The manufacture of the boiler has been a little delayed, there are two reasons for this, one is that the boilermaker has been let down by his suppliers/sub contractors and the other is that building the boiler as an exact replica of the original has meant relearning some old skills. However the plus point is that we are getting ,as Nick Walker on a recent visit states, a fascinating piece of engineering, and that the fastidious and perfectionist approach of Pridhams should ensure many years of steaming.'

It is hoped that the construction of the boiler should be completed by approx mid April, after which we will have a better estimate of when VIC32 is actually back steaming.

Boiler Update VIC 32 is now in the shed at Corpach Boatyard and work is underway to replace the hull plating in the boiler area, Nick is filming this for the DVD which should be available at the end of the work. While at Corpach the condenser has been removed and refurbished. The new boiler is on schedule and should be at Corpach by the end of the year, thanks to the efforts of R. K. Pridhams Engineering.

Dear Mr Smith,

As per our telephone conversation I have pleasure in confirming the progress on the Puffer boiler. I enclose a photo of the rolled components that make up the majority of the boiler shell and also part of the boiler drawing which you may be able to use in your newsletter.

After much searching we finally unearthed the original boiler drawings with many thanks going to Cochrane's who spent many hours in their archive for us.

All the rolled sections for the boiler shell are now with us, as are the boiler cross tubes. The domed crown sheets should be with us in the next few days as should all the press tools needed for the pressed components.

Almost 1000 rivets were delivered last week ready to join all the components together. We will very soon start the assembly process and it will not be too long before we have something resembling a new boiler.

If I can provide any further information please do not hesitate to contact me by any of the usual methods.

With regards

Paul Pridham
